TIMELESS DANISH DESIGN: SMALL WORLD H. C. Andersen is the name of a new and exclusive concept in children’s interior design. A concept in which the figures and motifs from the classical fairytales of the Danish poet find new life on furniture and textiles. By Christina Grundmann

It’s an absolute fairytale! They are all there: The Princess on the Pea, The Tinderbox, Thumbelina, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Sandman…  On bed ends, safety rails, duvet covers, decor cushions and bedspreads. Everywhere we look, we are met by all the wonderful creatures from the universe of H C Andersen.

Furniture keeping up with the times  A whole year long designer Jane Dahlmann from the family-owned, danish furniture company SMALL WORLD by Marlip A/S has been working intensely on the development of the new concept whose target group is children aged 3 to 10 years. ”With high quality furniture without fittings visible from the outside and thoroughly tested textiles made from 100% pure cotton we meet our time’s demands concerning the decoration of children’s rooms”, Jane Dahlmann says, and she continues: “Also the demands of large flexibility are met, meaning that our furniture is able to keep up with the times. We know that most children change their preferences as they grow older. The older children often want other colours in their rooms than the ones they had when they were younger, and this we have, of course, taken into account”. Consequently, Beds, wardrobe, bookcase, chest of drawers and night table are available in the basic colour of cream white, while finials for the bedposts, drawer fronts and wardrobe doors come in 7 different colours and can be replaced anytime. Handles are in quality leather.

Environmentally friendly production  Respect for nature is, by the way, yet another common denominator between Hans Christian Andersen and the Danish company. In addition to a clean design, SMALL WORLD by Marlip A/S attaches great importance to an environmentally friendly production process. Therefore all the furniture in the H. C. Andersen concept is treated with environmentally friendly, water based lacquers, and the textiles are tested according to the strict Oeko-Tex regulations concerning production without the use of environmentally damaging substances.

The concept was for the first time introduced to the public at the International Furniture Fair in Cologne, January 2005. In the year 2000 Jane Dahlmann created the company’s first concept in children’s interior design SMALL WORLD Disney.

Come along and look for new and exciting adventure together with Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse and Minnie! A nice sailing trip with Winnie the Pooh and Piglet for babies and juniors. Or what about a quick flight in an airplane with Mickey as a pilot? Or maybe a romantic day among fragrant flowers with Minnie? Or…? It is so easy to find something that you feel like doing. The difficulty is to choose among the countless possibilities… 

A classic concept keeping up with the trends of time: The Danish furniture export company SMALL WORLD by Marlip A/S is fully mastering the difficult balance between timelessness and innovation. This is now demonstrated by a complete relaunch of the well-known and popular lifestyle concept for the children’s room, SMALL WORLD Disney, that was presented for the first time in 2002. 

All the most sought-after products are continued or redesigned, and at the same time we are introducing a lot of novelties”, SMALL WORLD designer Jane Dahlmann says, and she continues: ”In this way we are now launching two completely new textile designs: SAILING POOH with Winnie the Pooh and MY BEST PALS with new, lovely embroideries of Mickey and Minnie. The textile design AMERICAN BASEBALL is produced from a new fabric in a lighter shade of blue, but in the well-known luxury soft denim quality. Other novelties are, among other things, detachable throw covers for our upholstery chair, a very large desk, cleanly designed book and CD storage units to hang on the wall and also some long sought-after striped wallpaper in colours matching the concept. Finally, we have renewed many of the Disney motifs of the ovals for the furniture”.

The unique thing about the SMALL WORLD Disney concept is the above mentioned detachable ovals that are fastened to the furniture. The ovals are available in different colours with Disney motifs, the child's name and with no motif at all and are replaceable at any time. In this way it is guaranteed that the furniture can also be used outside the children’s room when the child has grown up.

Safety and environmentally friendly production : SMALL WORLD Disney furniture is produced and tested according to the strict European safety norms and carries the internationally approved GS sticker, where this is necessary. The danish company also attaches great importance to an environmentally friendly production process. Therefore all the furniture in the SMALL WORLD Disney concept is made of solid pinewood and is treated with environmentally friendly, water-based lacquers. All textiles are produced according to the strict Oeko-Tex regulations concerning production without the use of damaging substances.

In addition to SMALL WORLD Disney, Jane Dahlmann has also created the company’s two other concepts in children’s interior design, SMALL WORLD H. C. Andersen and SMALL WORLD Rock Star Baby.

White, honey, light pink, light blue, royal blue and combinations of these colours all as indicated in the images.

Small World by Marlip manufactures concept furniture for children and in so doing assumes responsibility and consequently never compromises on children’s safety.

Every single piece of Small World furniture has been designed and developed considering the observation of all recommended safety measures. All lying surfaces, side heights, distances between bars and boards, distances between steps of ladders, distances between bottoms and upper edges are safely thought through.

In addition all edges and corners are softly rounded and the furniture is stable. Children may pull at the bars and jump in the beds.

Baby cots, playpens, low and high sleepers and bunk beds have special additional safety tests. All these types of Small World furniture items are safety approved according to the strict European safety norms and carry the internationally recognised GS label (Geprufte Sicherheit) which guarantees that a long series of safety measures have been met and in this way the children’s and the parent’s guarantee for optimum safety is attained.

Any product that has ovals shown can have a choice of oval and will be included in the price.

Oval plate choices are in four colours with a child’s name, various Disney Mickey or Minnie mouse images, Winnie the Pooh or just a plain colour can be put on the interchangeable oval plates.

If a customer wishes extra ovals these can be purchased seperately.

Small World furniture colours available are mostly combinations of white, honey, pale blue and pink.

All beds require slats priced seperately as flat hardwood slats or sprung beech slats at extra cost.

The boy’s Baronial Castle bed is available only in blue and curtains and flag are priced seperately.

All prices quoted are flatpack in cardboard boxes - We can quote for an assembly service if required

Please note that the manufacturer imposes a minimum order of £450 for textiles and since a customer’s requirements will be less than this we must impose a surcharge of £35 unless we have sufficient current orders pending. However, if a customer orders furniture together with textiles this charge will be waived.

Some textiles have exclusive Disney licensed embroidered motifs.
